I&#8217;m sure I&#8217;m missing many important things, but a few highlights include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ben&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamapediatrics\/fullarticle\/2815850\"><em>JAMA Peds<\/em> paper<\/a> got a lot of media attention, which prompted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.durbin.senate.gov\/newsroom\/press-releases\/durbin-announces-new-resources-to-address-child-lead-poisoning-risks-in-chicago\">action from Senators Duckworth and Durbin<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>A student paper on sub-national excess overdose estimates <a href=\"https:\/\/ajph.aphapublications.org\/doi\/full\/10.2105\/AJPH.2024.307618\">got published in <em>AJPH<\/em><\/a> after four years \u2014 just proving how resilient and persistent the new crop of PhD students are.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/profiles.stanford.edu\/keith-humphreys\">Keith<\/a> and I <a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamanetworkopen\/fullarticle\/2829860\">wrote a thing<\/a> about how the &#8220;higher&#8221; or &#8220;lower&#8221; mortality really depends on your comparison group.<\/li>\n<li>Our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ajph.aphapublications.org\/doi\/full\/10.2105\/AJPH.2024.307618\"><em>JAMA<\/em> paper<\/a> estimating parental deaths due to drug poisoning and firearms was cited in the US Surgeon General&#8217;s Advisory on Firearm Violence, which was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/03\/17\/trump-gun-violence-public-health-advisory-00234171\">deleted (today) by the current administration<\/a>. Thankfully, I&#8217;m vain and saved a copy of the PDF, which <a href=\"http:\/\/mathewkiang.com\/assets\/firearm-violence-advisory.pdf\">you can find here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/monicaalexander.com\">Monica<\/a> and I wrote <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/aje\/advance-article-abstract\/doi\/10.1093\/aje\/kwae156\/7699732?redirectedFrom=fulltext\">a thing about how we need better data to understand drug use<\/a> \u2014 especially timely as public health data get <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/future-perfect\/399319\/trump-cdc-health-data-removed-obesity-suicide\">removed<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/26\/health\/usaid-global-health-surveys.html\">discontinued<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statnews.com\/2025\/03\/03\/cdc-pauses-prams-database-which-tracks-racial-disparities-maternal-health\/\">paused<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>A <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/aje\/advance-article-abstract\/doi\/10.1093\/aje\/kwaf002\/7945633\">paper with Holly<\/a> (that went through at least 8 rejections) was finally accepted, wrapping up a 3 year long project.<\/li>\n<li>After a couple dozen meetings, a dozen or so flights, and 2.5 years of work, <a href=\"https:\/\/nap.nationalacademies.org\/catalog\/28584\/veterans-prescription-opioids-and-benzodiazepines-and-mortality-2007-2019-three\">the NASEM Consensus Committee report<\/a> I was working on is finally out.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>While trying to update my (now every-other-year) traditional collaboration network post, I also found a few tidbits about assistant professor life that I never got around to writing up.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mathewkiangcom.local\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/network_evo.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2751\" src=\"http:\/\/mathewkiangcom.local\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/network_evo.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"2250\" height=\"2250\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Below is a plot of collaborations\/papers (circles) over time (x-axis) by collaborator\/coauthor (y-axis).
