Newsflash: I got a grant to conduct my own research project.

So in a bit of exciting news, I got the results back from the 2009 Dean’s Grants for Student Research Competition today. Turns out I’m a grant recipient. It was a surprise considering a historically heavy preference for doctoral students, but I’m glad and honored to follow in a long line of CHIBPS researchers who have received the honor–four years running now.

I’m particularly excited about this one because it was is open-ended grant. I didn’t have to submit a proposal based around a particular topic and it did not need to be related to my degree. And it’s combines something I’ve always been curious about (altruism and charitable giving) with something I like to do (donate to charities) and aspects of public health (fundraising and educational interventions). It’s a nice thing to get money to do something you just kind of wanted to try out of curiosity.

I won’t go into too much detail about it yet. I am currently submitting my application to NYU’s IRB for approval and, hopefully, I’ll have the study up and running by September. Stayed tune though. This one will be interesting.

Until then, I leave you with a little song to celebrate: Albert Hammond Jr performing “Everyone gets a star.”
